RIBA London Award for Education and Community Buildings

As framework contractor for the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham, Neilcott undertook the design and construction of a new annex block to the existing Northbury School.  The extension was required to enlarge the school from three forms of entry to four, and was one of a number of projects carried out in the Borough to meet the increased demand for Primary School places.  Our project has received a RIBA London Award for Education and Community Buildings, the RIBA Awards for London form, arguably the most rigorously judged annual awards programmes in the world, with every one of the entries being visited by the judging panel.  They are given for buildings that have high architectural standards, make a contribution to the local environment and demonstrate excellence.  Northbury School has also been “Highly Commended” by the British Council for School Environments in the category; Best School Extension, Refurbishment of Remodel.

Head teacher Richard November said “The classrooms are wonderful.  The use of space, the amount of light and the ambient feel to the rooms seem to enhance learning.  The abundance of wood everywhere is pleasant.  The acoustics are good and pupils are able to hear each other.  The old and new stand well together and most importantly the pupils love it”
