Ground Breaking St Peter’s midwifery-led Birth Unit

The Chairman of Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Aileen McLeish, cut the first turf to start the construction work on a brand-new midwifery-led unit at St. Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey.  The new unit will provide a “home from home” environment for women who have normal and uncomplicated pregnancies and want to give birth in a less clinical setting.  It will sit next to the existing maternity unit.

Mrs McLeish said “It has been a long time coming but I know that everyone involved is very excited at having this midwife-led unit which is a really important development for us at Ashford and St. Peter’s”.  There will be four rooms in the new unit, three with large birthing pools.  It will be run by midwives rather than doctors and it is intended to be a homely and relaxing environment, where women can move around freely during labour and have the option of giving birth in the pool.  Each spacious room will offer en-suite bathroom plus extra touches such as TV and IPodSt-Peters-Groundbreaking docking station sound system.  Large windows will give natural light with a small garden space outside each room.
