Gascoigne Primary School

Neilcott have commenced another exciting project for the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.  Gascoigne Primary School in Barking is one of the largest primary schools in the UK.  More than 1100 pupils attend the five-form-entry school, and as numbers have increased the accommodation has expanded with mobile classrooms taking up valuable space on site.
The school has a good reputation for supporting children from many different backgrounds: a large proportion of pupils arrive with English as a second language, and Ofsted has praised the way it deals with new and vulnerable pupils. Neilcott alongside our architects Walters and Cohen won the competition to design a new extension on a council-owned plot on an adjoining road; this aims to continue the school’s ethos and values and provide much needed space. On completion the new primary school will cater for 39 full-time equivalent nursery pupils and 630 primary pupils aged 4-11 in KS1 and KS2, organised as 3FE. This in turn allows the existing Gascoigne Primary School site to reduce to 4FE, thus creating a 7FE school over two sites.
To make the most of the very tight site, a3D_model-birds-eye-1 three-storey option was taken forward, with early years, administration and community facilities at ground floor level, years 1, 2 and 3 on the first floor, and years 3, 4 and 5 plus staffroom facilities on the second floor. Each level has an outdoor deck, providing each year group with a dedicated outdoor learning area adjacent to their class bases. The site is largely unconstrained with the exception of four trees which have Tree Protection Orders. Careful landscaping of the remaining site will enable outdoor spaces for the early years at ground floor, as well as spill out dining areas and parking.
