Swanmore College Big Build Challenge

On behalf of Hampshire County Council, Neilcott undertook the construction of a new Performing Arts Building and refurbishment of 4 existing blocks at Swanmore College, during this project the Neilcott team set the students a “Big Build” challenge.  Working in teams the students were required to act as a small construction company that designed and constructed sustainable projects.  The Client (in this case, the College Governor’s) had purchased a section of the College Estate, which was not previously used by the students or staff.  Each of the construction company’s were required to tender for the works to transform this disused, outdoor area into a sustainable and ecological space that could be used by the College.  Each team were required to assign job roles and responsibilities to members of the team, produce a site plan showing the proposed area to scale, together with all aspects of the proposed design, which were to be detailed upon this plan, produce a cost report detailing all proposed expenditure and produce a programme detailing the design and construction timetable. This culminated in a presentation to a client panel, made up of Governor’s, Hampshire County Council and the Neilcott team, with the winning design building out their proposals.  To assist the teams in their Challenge members of the Neilcott Team and Hampshire County Council design service gave a presentation to the students on the various careers in construction which linked with the roles that each would play.  A presentation skills, design, cost and programme workshop was also provided to assist them in the final presentation.  The winning team were Swantech who designed a bandstand building with flower beds, birdhouses, vegetable gardens and internal benches were a range of both social and educational events could be undertaken.  Although slightly over budget the team put in place excellent contingency measures to cover this shortfall which included a range of fundraising activities and the use of recycled materials.  Well done Swantech the Neilcott team hope to be invited back to see the finished building.IMG_0330IMG_0321
