Uphall Primary School Groundbreaking

Works to expand Uphall Primary School in Ilford commenced with a Groundbreaking ceremony attended by the Lady Mayoress Felicity Banks on Friday 10th January.   The school is due to expand from September 2014 and will be admitting the first year of additional reception children for the expansion on this date.  The original building and the Caretaker’s Lodge were built by Essex County Council as a Primary School in the early 1900s and they display Victorian and Edwardian Characteristics.  The school was extended to the south in approximately 2005.  “The Ship”, the listed nursery building, was built in the 1930′s and the building housing the library dates from the 1960′s.  Neilcott are designing and constructing a new three storey block which connects into the existing school, together with a new MUGA and associated external works.  Neilcott’s Managing Director, Malcolm Elster, said “We are delighted to start work on this exciting scheme for Redbridge which will provide much needed places for the School”.  Cabinet Member for children’s services. Cllr Alan Weinberg expects demand for primary school places in Redbridge to continue increasing.  He said “To build new school you need land and if you look at Redbridge, we don’t have an abundance of land.  When you have a school that’s operating well, why not expand rather then hunting for a new site?”
